I had the privilege of meeting Mr Chaminda, the owner of Lumbini Estate, during a visit to Sri Lanka – and I’ve seen firsthand the passion and precision that goes into every leaf. Nestled in the lush Ruhunu region at around 2,000 feet above sea level, Lumbini stands out not only for its quality but for the spirit of the land it calls home.
Travelling into Ruhunu is an adventure in itself. As the road winds into the hills, the world bursts into colour – women in vibrant saris carry baskets of jungle-picked fruit, children spill from roadside schoolhouses, and the scent of spice and ripe mango hangs in the air. Amidst this sensory symphony, the tea fields emerge in striking contrast: serene, structured, and elegant, with orderly rows of Camellia sinensis shaded by tall white-washed trees.
While Sri Lanka is famed for its high-grown teas from Uva and Dimbula, the lower-elevation gardens of Ruhunu produce something altogether different. Deep and brooding on the palate, it leads with strength and complexity, offering rich notes of plum, malt, and a satisfying, lingering astringency. The bright copper liquor is a joy to look at and even more rewarding to sip – especially with a splash of milk to round out its intensity.
