From the Island

Taiwanese tea, loose leaf and hand-packed in Yorkshire

Taiwan produces some of the most distinctive oolongs in the world. The island's high-altitude slopes and humid climate create growing conditions that let tea leaves develop unusual depth: floral, creamy, sometimes honeyed, always with a lingering finish. Our Taiwanese teas include Formosa Oolong and Oriental Beauty Oolong, both prized for their complexity and smoothness.

These are teas for slowing down. Pour a cup of Formosa Oolong in the afternoon and you'll notice the rounded, aromatic character with gentle natural sweetness and warm toasty depth. Oriental Beauty, famously bug-bitten during growth, offers rich honey notes and a natural muscatel character. Both reward multiple steeps, opening up differently each time.

If you enjoy oolongs from other regions, Taiwanese varieties offer something a little different: often lighter oxidation, more floral lift, and an elegance that suits drinking without milk. They make excellent introductions to oolong for newcomers and rewarding brews for those who already know the category well.

How to choose

01

Lighter or richer

Formosa Oolong sits on the lighter, greener end with floral and fruity notes. Oriental Beauty is more oxidised, offering honeyed depth. Choose based on whether you want brightness or richness.

02

Multiple steeps

Both teas here unfold over several infusions. Use a smaller vessel and short steeps for the best results, or brew Western-style for a single satisfying cup.

03

Time of day

Oolongs contain moderate caffeine, making them well suited to afternoon drinking. If you prefer evenings caffeine-free, browse our tisane range instead.

Further reading

What does Taiwanese oolong taste like

Taiwanese oolongs are typically lighter than their Chinese counterparts. Expect floral aromas, stone fruit, and a creamy or buttery mouthfeel. Oriental Beauty adds honey and muscatel notes from its unique production method.

How do I brew Taiwan oolong tea

Use water around 85–90°C. Steep for two to three minutes for a first infusion, then add time for subsequent steeps. A gaiwan or small teapot works well, but a standard infuser is fine too.

Can I drink Taiwanese tea with milk

These oolongs are best enjoyed without milk. Their delicate flavours shine when served plain. If you prefer milk in your tea, a malty Assam or robust breakfast blend may suit you better.

Is Formosa the same as Taiwan

Yes. Formosa is the historical Portuguese name for Taiwan, still used in tea circles to describe teas from the island. Formosa Oolong simply means oolong from Taiwan.

How many times can I steep Taiwanese oolong

Quality Taiwanese oolongs often yield three to five good infusions. Use less leaf and more water if you prefer a single brew, or experiment with gongfu-style brewing for multiple short steeps.
