Earthy teas have flavours reminiscent of damp woodland, mushrooms, wet stone or turned soil. Pu-erh is the classic example. The taste comes from the tea's fermentation and ageing process.
Is smoky tea actually smoked?
Traditional Lapsang Souchong is dried over smouldering pine wood, which infuses the leaves with smoke. The intensity varies by producer.
Can you add milk to smoky tea?
Yes, particularly Russian Caravan and other lighter-smoked black teas. The milk softens the smoke and brings out malty notes. Pu-erh is generally best without milk.
What is Pu-erh tea?
