Start with the flavour you want rather than the tea name. Choose malty for a rich cup with milk, bright or floral for drinking black, bergamot for citrus fragrance, or smoky when you want something unmistakable.

Rich, malty, satisfying

Premium loose leaf black tea for every cup

Black tea is the backbone of British tea drinking. Fully oxidised leaves give you that deep amber colour, bold body and satisfying strength that stands up to milk or drinks beautifully on its own. From a brisk morning brew to something more refined in the afternoon, this is tea with presence.

Our range of loose leaf black teas covers the full spectrum. English Breakfast and Irish Breakfast bring familiar malty comfort. Classic Earl Grey and Cream Earl Grey offer bergamot brightness. For something with more character, Emperor Butterfly Lapsang Souchong delivers pine smoke, while Margaret's Hope Darjeeling 2nd Flush TGFOP shows the muscatel notes that make Darjeeling famous.

Whether you drink your tea strong with milk or prefer a lighter, more aromatic cup, there's something here. Single-origin teas from Assam, Ceylon and Yunnan sit alongside flavoured blends like Vanilla Chai and Blueberry Maple. All hand-packed in Yorkshire and ready to ship.

How to choose

01

By strength and body

After a robust morning cup? Irish Breakfast and Bukhial Assam pack proper punch. For something lighter, Lover's Leap Ceylon OP or Margaret's Hope Darjeeling give you elegance without heaviness.

02

By caffeine needs

Most black teas contain natural caffeine. If you want flavour without the buzz, Decaf English Breakfast and Decaf Earl Grey use CO2 decaffeination to keep taste intact while removing most caffeine.

03

By milk or without

Malty Assams and breakfast blends take milk well. Earl Greys and Darjeelings are often best black or with just a splash, letting their aromatics shine through.

Good questions

Things people ask us in the shop

What makes loose leaf black tea better than tea bags?

Loose leaf gives the leaves room to unfurl and release their full flavour. You get more complexity, better aroma and often more than one infusion from the same leaves. The difference in the cup is noticeable.

How do I brew black tea properly?

Use freshly boiled water at 95–100°C. Add one teaspoon per cup, steep for 3–5 minutes depending on how strong you like it. Adjust to taste. Most black teas here can handle a longer brew without turning bitter.

Can I buy decaf black tea?

Yes. We stock Decaf English Breakfast, Decaf Earl Grey and Decaf Masala Chai. All are decaffeinated using the CO2 method, which removes caffeine while preserving flavour.

What is the difference between Assam and Darjeeling tea?

Both come from India but taste quite different. Assam is malty, full-bodied and takes milk well. Darjeeling is lighter with muscatel and floral notes, often drunk black. Different regions, different character.

How should I store loose leaf black tea?

Keep it in an airtight container away from light, heat and strong smells. A cool cupboard works well. Stored properly, black tea keeps best when stored airtight, away from light and strong smells.

FIND YOUR BLACK TEA

Start with the cup you want to drink.

Black tea is a broad shelf, not a single flavour. Choose familiar and malty, bright with bergamot, genuinely smoky, or a more delicate single-origin cup.

READ THE LEAF

Four origins. Four very different cups.

Where black tea grows shapes its body, aroma and finish. Use these signposts to find the character you enjoy.

01

ASSAM · INDIA

Deep, malty and built for milk.

Full-bodied with a brisk structure. Choose Assam when you want warmth, strength and a satisfying breakfast cup.

02

CEYLON · SRI LANKA

Bright, clean and quietly lively.

Crisp and clear with a brisk finish. It makes an elegant black cup and gives Earl Grey its confident backbone.

03

DARJEELING · INDIA

Fragrant, lifted and nuanced.

Lighter in body with floral, muscatel character. Best explored black so its delicate detail can come through.

04

YUNNAN · CHINA

Rounded, sweet and softly cocoa-rich.

Smooth and generous with natural sweetness. A welcoming route into single-origin black tea.

BREW THE CHARACTER, NOT THE BITTERNESS

More leaf makes a stronger cup. More time can make a rougher one.

Use freshly boiled water and start at two to three minutes. Taste before adding time; if you want more body next time, increase the amount of leaf.

100°C water

Freshly boiled water wakes up the full black-tea flavour.

One teaspoon

Use one teaspoon per cup, adding a little more for milk.

Two to three minutes

Lift the leaves, taste, and adjust the next brew from there.

WITH MILK

Choose malt and body.

English Breakfast is the versatile all-rounder. Bukhial Assam goes richer and maltier; Irish Breakfast is the strongest blend on the shelf.

WITHOUT MILK

Follow fragrance and clarity.

Try Ceylon for brightness, Darjeeling for floral muscatel detail, or Yunnan for a rounded cup with gentle cocoa sweetness.

LESS CAFFEINE

Keep proper black-tea flavour.

Decaf English Breakfast keeps a rounded everyday body. Decaf Earl Grey adds bright bergamot, while Decaf Masala Chai brings warming spice.

BLACK TEA, EXPLAINED

A clearer answer before your next cup.

What is black tea?

Black tea is made from tea leaves that are allowed to oxidise fully before drying. That process develops the deeper colour and broad range of malty, brisk, fruity, floral or smoky flavours associated with black tea.

Does black tea contain caffeine?

Yes. Black tea naturally contains caffeine, although the amount in your cup varies with the leaf, serving size and brew time. Our decaffeinated black teas have most of their caffeine removed but can still contain a small amount.

Which black tea is best with milk?

Look for body and maltiness. English Breakfast is the most versatile place to start, Bukhial Assam is richer and more single-origin in character, and Irish Breakfast gives the strongest, darkest blend.

Which black tea is best without milk?

Ceylon is bright and clean, Darjeeling is fragrant and nuanced, and Yunnan is rounded with gentle cocoa sweetness. Earl Grey also drinks beautifully black when you want a citrus lift.

Why can black tea taste bitter?

It is often brewed for too long. Start with freshly boiled water and two to three minutes, then taste. For more strength, use more leaf on the next brew rather than extending the infusion indefinitely.

How should I store loose leaf black tea?

Keep it sealed, cool and dry, away from sunlight, moisture and strong aromas. The resealable pack is designed to protect the leaves between brews.

Is all black tea breakfast tea?

No. Breakfast tea is usually a robust black-tea blend designed for body and everyday brewing. Black tea also includes fragrant Earl Grey, smoky Lapsang Souchong, spiced chai and distinctive single-origin teas from Assam, Ceylon, Darjeeling, Yunnan and beyond.

Are Porter Hill black teas vegan?

Yes. All Porter Hill teas are vegan. Individual ingredient lists are shown on every product page, including any natural flavourings, flowers, fruit or spices used in a blend.
