Most Earl Greys are built on lighter Ceylon or Chinese black teas. Earl of Colne Valley takes a different route, using rich, malty Bukhial Assam as its foundation. The result is a cup with real heft underneath the bergamot, one that stands up to milk without losing its citrus character.
The bergamot comes through first, bright and fragrant rather than soapy or perfumed. Then the Assam arrives with that familiar thick, biscuity depth. Cornflower petals add a bit of colour to the leaf but stay out of the way in the cup. The finish is crisp and clean, not cloying.
Named with a nod to Yorkshire, this is Earl Grey for people who find the standard version a bit too delicate for a proper morning brew.
