Single-origin Assam
A proper morning tea with serious body and a gently peaty finish. Bukhial is the kind of Assam you reach for when you want a cup that actually tastes like something: malty, brisk and completely at home with milk.
The story
Bukhial sits on the southern banks of the Brahmaputra River in Assam's Golaghat district, not far from Nagaland. The estate covers over two thousand acres, with rich loamy soil left behind by annual floods and a climate that swings from hot monsoon summers to cool, dry winters. That combination produces a leaf with real character.
This is a TGFOP grade, meaning Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe: plenty of golden tips from the young buds alongside the top two leaves. The second flush harvest brings out that classic Assam maltiness, full-bodied and brisk, with a coppery-gold liquor that catches the light.
In the cup you get malt and a touch of something earthy, almost peaty, that lingers without turning smoky. Add a splash of milk and it becomes the kind of brew that makes ordinary breakfast tea feel a bit thin. Drink it black and you will taste what proper Assam is all about.
How to brew it
01Hot
Keep it short for brightness; longer for more body.
02With milk
A stronger steep stands up to a good splash of milk.
03Second steep
A softer, slightly sweeter cup with plenty of flavour left.
Shop tip: Use freshly boiled water and do not over-steep the first cup; two minutes keeps the briskness bright rather than bitter.
