About Porter Hill

We’re Porter Hill, an independent tea shop in Huddersfield’s Byram Arcade. We sell loose leaf tea, fruit and herbal infusions, and useful things to brew them in.

From a moped to a tea shop

I’m Matt. In July 2011, a local friend took me around Malaysia’s Cameron Highlands on a moped, stopping for tea along the way.

Ten years later, I was visiting tea estates in Sri Lanka. Somewhere between those trips and a garage full of tea, this became a business.

Porter Hill eventually moved out of the garage and into Byram Arcade. We’ve since outgrown our first shop and moved into our second, where there’s considerably less chance of finding a lawnmower.

These days, our small team sells tea over the counter, posts it across the UK and supplies independent cafés, bakeries and shops.

What’s your usual?

That’s generally a better starting point than asking whether you prefer an orthodox second-flush Assam.

Tell us what you drink and we’ll help you choose. It might be a strong breakfast blend, a single origin tea or something fruity without any tea in it at all. Small packs mean you can try something without committing to a kilo.

You don’t need to know much about tea to enjoy it. Knowing where you keep the kettle is enough to get started.

Our shop is just inside Byram Arcade’s Westgate entrance. Browse the shelves, have a look at the teaware and ask us whatever you like about tea. Other subjects will depend on who’s working.
