Caffeine-Free from South Africa
Loose leaf rooibos tea, naturally caffeine free
Rooibos grows only in the Cederberg mountains of South Africa, where the red bush plant has been harvested for generations. Once oxidised and dried, the needle-like leaves brew into a warm amber cup with a smooth, slightly sweet character and no bitterness at all. Because rooibos contains no caffeine and very little tannin, you can steep it long without it turning harsh, making it one of the most forgiving teas to brew.
Our range runs from the earthy simplicity of classic Rooibos through to flavoured blends like Earl Grey Rooibos with its bergamot lift, the almond warmth of Organic Marzipan Rooibos, and the bright berry notes of Fruit Rooibos. Rooibos De Provence adds lavender and rose petals for a more floral cup. Compare each blend’s ingredients, caffeine information and tasting notes before choosing.
Rooibos offers a rounded cup with woody and naturally sweet notes. Try plain rooibos or explore blends with fruit, flowers and spice; check each product’s ingredients and brewing directions.
How to choose
Plain or flavoured
Start with classic Rooibos if you want the pure, earthy taste of red bush. Move to Earl Grey Rooibos or Fruit Rooibos when you fancy bergamot or berries.
With or without milk
Rooibos has enough body to carry a splash of milk, especially the unflavoured version. Lighter blends like Rooibos De Provence are best enjoyed black to let the floral notes shine.
Brewing time
Rooibos is forgiving. A longer steep deepens the flavour rather than making it bitter, so you can brew for four to six minutes or leave it even longer without worry.

Good questions
Things people ask us in the shop
Is rooibos tea caffeine free?
Pure rooibos is naturally caffeine-free. For blends, check the complete ingredients and product-specific caffeine information. Caffeine absence is not a guarantee about sleep or individual suitability.
Does rooibos contain tannins?
Rooibos has very low tannin levels compared to black or green tea. This means it rarely turns bitter even if you forget about it and leave it steeping longer than intended.
How do I brew loose leaf rooibos?
Follow the individual product’s amount, water temperature and steeping time. The current plain Rooibos guide uses freshly boiled water and a three-minute infusion as its starting point.
Can I add milk to rooibos?
Absolutely. Plain rooibos takes milk nicely, giving a richer, rounder cup. Flavoured versions like Earl Grey Rooibos work either way depending on your taste.
What does rooibos taste like?
Expect a smooth, lightly sweet flavour with woody, honey-like notes and a gentle earthiness. There is no grassiness or bitterness, which is why many people find it easy to enjoy straight away.

ROOIBOS, EXPLAINED
Everything you need before the kettle boils.
What is rooibos tea?
Rooibos is an herbal infusion made from South Africa’s red bush, Aspalathus linearis. It is not made from the Camellia sinensis tea plant, which gives it its naturally caffeine-free character and mellow, gently sweet flavour.
Does rooibos contain caffeine?
No. Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free rather than decaffeinated, so no caffeine-removal process is needed. Every rooibos on this shelf is suitable when you want the ritual and flavour of a proper cup without caffeine.
What does rooibos taste like?
Classic Rooibos is smooth, honeyed, mellow and naturally sweet. Across this shelf you can also find fragrant bergamot, berries and rose, almond-like marzipan, floral Provence notes and warming spice.
Can I add milk to rooibos?
Yes. Classic Rooibos has enough body for milk, and Marzipan or Earl Grey Rooibos also make satisfyingly rounded milky cups. Fruit-led blends are usually at their brightest served without it.
How should I brew rooibos?
Use about one teaspoon per cup with freshly boiled 100°C water. Start with the time shown on the individual product page—usually around three minutes—and extend it if you prefer a deeper cup. Rooibos stays smooth and is forgiving of a longer infusion.
How is rooibos different from decaf tea?
Rooibos comes from a naturally caffeine-free plant and has its own mellow, honeyed red-bush character. Decaffeinated tea begins as tea from Camellia sinensis and has most of its caffeine removed, so it retains a more recognisably black- or green-tea profile.
What is green rooibos?
Green rooibos is the same South African plant with less oxidation, giving it a fresher, lighter character than traditional red rooibos. You will find both green and red rooibos alongside dandelion and warming spices in our Dandelion Detox blend.
Are Porter Hill rooibos teas vegan?
Yes. All Porter Hill teas are vegan. Every product page lists the ingredients clearly, including fruit, flowers, spices and natural flavourings used to create a blend.
