Margaret's Hope sits high in Darjeeling's North Valley, around 6,800 feet above sea level, where cool mists and steep terrain slow the tea bushes down. That patience shows up in the cup. Second-flush leaves, picked through May and June, develop the muscatel character Darjeeling is famous for: a wine-like fragrance, ripe fruit sweetness and a gentle astringency that lifts rather than grips.
TGFOP stands for Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe, a grade that means plenty of golden tips among the orthodox whole leaves. You can see them in the dry leaf, almost green in places. They brew into a bright amber liquor with a bouquet that hints at currants and Muscat grapes.
This is not a tea to rush. Give it a proper cup, a quiet moment and two minutes in the pot. Sip it black, let the fragrance do its work. If you have been drinking tea bags all your life, this is the sort of cup that makes you wonder what else you have been missing.
