The story
Tea shaped like a bird's nest
These little compressed bowls have been made in Yunnan for centuries. Pu-erh leaves were pressed into portable shapes for the ancient Tea Road, when merchants needed tea that could travel thousands of miles without spoiling. The tradition stuck because the shape works: compact, easy to measure, and satisfying to watch as the nest slowly opens in your pot.
Pu-erh is a post-fermented tea, which means the leaves undergo microbial ageing after they are dried. This gives the brew its characteristic earthy, woody depth, quite unlike any black tea you have tried before. The liquor pours dark and smooth, with a mineral edge and a finish that lingers.
One mini tuocha is about five grams, enough for a small pot. Rinse it briefly with hot water, pour that away, then brew properly. The leaves reward patience and will happily steep two or three times, changing subtly with each infusion. A bold departure from your usual afternoon cup.

What does pu-erh tea taste like?

How much caffeine is in pu-erh?
Pu-erh contains natural caffeine, roughly comparable to black tea. If you want a later evening cup, a caffeine-free rooibos or herbal would be a gentler choice.
Should I add milk to pu-erh?
