The story

Why Yunnan deserves a whole box

Yunnan sits in China's mountainous south-west, where tea has been cultivated for centuries and local traditions run deep. The province is famous as the home of pu-erh and produces some of the country's most distinctive black teas. What makes it interesting is the variety: the same region can yield sweet golden-tipped blacks, earthy fermented cakes, mellow yellows and everything in between.

This box gives you four of them. Golden Heaven Yunnan brings malt, cocoa and gentle spice. Snow Yunnan is smoother, with a light smokiness and a clean finish. Mini Tuo Cha Pu-Erh offers that unmistakable earthy depth, a good starting point if you have never tried fermented tea. Badaling Yellow Tea rounds things off with something softer and rarer, sitting between green and white in character.

The idea is to brew them side by side, notice the differences and let your palate do the work. By the time you reach the bottom of each pouch you will know Yunnan a little better, and probably have a favourite to reorder.

How many cups does the box make?

You get 100g in total. Using roughly 2.5g per cup, about one teaspoon, that works out to around 40 cups altogether, or 10 from each tea. Plenty for proper exploration rather than token samples.

Is this suitable for someone new to loose leaf tea?

Very much so. Each pouch comes with straightforward brewing instructions, so there is no need to know your pu-erh from your yellow tea before you start. That is rather the point.

Does it contain caffeine?

Yes. All four teas come from the Camellia sinensis plant, so they contain caffeine. The pu-erh and black teas have more; the yellow tea a little less.

Can I add milk to these teas?

The two black teas, Golden Heaven and Snow Yunnan, take milk well if that is your preference. The pu-erh and yellow tea are best enjoyed without.

Will it fit through a letterbox?

It arrives in a kraft gift box, which is slim but slightly too large for most letterboxes. The courier will leave it somewhere safe or pop a card through.

Our Yunnan Tea Adventure is a little tour through one of the world's oldest and most important tea-growing regions — thankfully without the airfare.

Inside you'll find four very different loose leaf teas, each with its own character. There's the rich sweetness of Golden Heaven Yunnan, the smooth and slightly smoky Snow Yunnan, an earthy Mini Tuo Cha Pu-Erh, and the wonderfully mellow Badaling Yellow Tea.

Taste them side by side and you begin to see just how much difference the leaf, processing and local tradition can make. That's really the point of the box. It's not simply four nice teas bundled together; it's a chance to sit down, put the kettle on and explore Yunnan properly.
