The story
Southern China's fragrant tradition
Lychee Congou comes from Guangdong province, where black tea has been scented with fresh lychee fruit since the 1950s. The process is patient: Congou leaves are layered with ripe lychee until they absorb the fruit's aroma, then dried without the fruit itself. What remains is a clean, naturally sweet fragrance woven right through the leaf.
In the cup you get a rounded, gently malty black tea lifted by that distinctive lychee note. Juicy and floral-fruity, with hints of grape and rose, but never cloying. The finish is smooth and surprisingly clean, without the stickiness you might expect from a fruit-scented tea.
This is one for the afternoon, when you want something more interesting than your usual brew but still properly tea-like. No need for sugar; the natural sweetness does the work. Equally good hot on a grey day or poured over ice when the sun decides to show itself.
