Organic Chinese green tea
Watch these tight little pellets unfurl in the pot, releasing a crisp, vegetal cup with a toasty edge. A proper everyday green that rewards patience.
The story
Gunpowder tea gets its name from the small, tight balls the leaves are rolled into — they look a bit like old-fashioned shot. The rolling keeps more flavour locked in and helps the tea stay fresh longer. This one comes from Zhejiang province in China, picked when the leaves are at their brightest.
In the cup you get clean vegetal freshness, a little grassy, with a lightly toasty finish that stops it tasting thin. It is smooth rather than harsh, with enough body to hold up across two or three steeps. Each infusion opens the leaves a bit more and shifts the flavour slightly, worth paying attention to.
If you have a glass teapot or cup, use it. Half the pleasure is watching those pearls slowly bloom. The other half is drinking something lively and refreshing without any fuss. Good on its own, and the classic base for Moroccan mint tea if you want to add a handful of fresh spearmint.
How to brew it
01Hot
Watch the pellets open. Increase to 3½ minutes for a stronger cup.
02Second steep
Good for 2–3 infusions; flavour softens and sweetens each time.
03Iced
Strain and serve over ice. Bright and refreshing.
Shop tip: Use a glass teapot or mug. The leaves unfurling is half the experience.

Good questions
Yes, it contains a medium level of natural caffeine. Best enjoyed before late afternoon if caffeine affects your sleep.
No. Milk would cloud the clean vegetal flavour. Drink it straight, or with a little honey or sugar if you like.
Around 40 cups, using roughly 2.5g (one teaspoon) per cup. The leaves can be re-steeped two or three times, so you may get more.
The rolled pellets look a bit like old gunpowder shot. Rolling keeps the leaves fresher and locks in more flavour until you brew them.
Keep it sealed in a cool, dry place away from heat, sunlight and strong smells. An airtight tin or the resealable pouch works well.

Enjoy it plain to taste the leaf, or add fresh mint for a brighter, cooling cup. It is a lively choice if you like your green tea with a little more character.
Use water at 80°C and start with the brewing time below. If the cup is too bitter for your taste, try a shorter steep next time. Strain the leaves once brewed, then try a second infusion.
