Loose Leaf Black Tea FAQs
What is loose leaf black tea?
Loose leaf black tea is made from whole tea leaves that are minimally processed and not broken down into dust or fannings like traditional teabags. This means better flavour, more antioxidants, and a fuller, richer brew.
Is loose black tea stronger than bagged tea?
Yes — loose leaf black tea typically has a stronger, more complex flavour because it uses higher-quality, unbroken leaves. You also have more control over how much tea you brew and how strong you make it.
What does loose black tea taste like?
Loose black tea varies by origin and blend. Ceylon black tea is bright and citrusy, Assam is malty and bold, while Darjeeling offers a muscatel, wine-like finish. Our collection ranges from smooth and mellow to robust and invigorating.
How do you brew loose leaf black tea?
Use 1 teaspoon per cup, steep in freshly boiled water (95–100°C) for 2–4 minutes depending on your taste. Strain and enjoy black, with milk, or with a twist of lemon. To learn more check out our brew guide.
Does black tea contain caffeine?
Yes — black tea contains around 40–70mg of caffeine per cup. It’s a great alternative to coffee for a gentle energy boost with fewer jitters.
Is loose leaf tea better for the environment?
Absolutely. Loose leaf tea means less packaging, no microplastics from teabags, and compostable leaves. We pack all our teas plastic-free right here in Yorkshire.
Which is the best loose leaf black tea?
It depends on your taste. English Breakfast is a classic choice. For something bolder, try Assam or check out our Earl Grey collection. Feeling adventurous? Our Emperor Butterly Lapsang Souchong is powerfully smoking and a team Porter Hill favourite.
Can you reuse loose black tea leaves?
Yes — many black teas can be steeped multiple. The subsequent infusions will have a lighter flavour, but still plenty of character. This can make them deceptively good value for money, especially when you get into the real luxury teas like those in our Pankøsmia Collection.
Is organic loose black tea healthier?
Organic black teas are grown without synthetic fertilisers or pesticides, which some people prefer for health or environmental reasons. We offer organic options for many of our teas and blends. Check them out here.
