The story
Java's lesser-known gift to the teacup
Indonesian tea rarely gets the attention it deserves. While Assam and Ceylon dominate the breakfast table, Java quietly produces some genuinely interesting black teas at altitude, and Santosa is a fine example. The leaves are processed in the orthodox style and graded BOPS, which stands for Broken Orange Pekoe Special. Smaller broken leaves mean a quicker brew with plenty of flavour.
What you get in the cup is a medium-bodied tea with real character. There is maltiness, yes, but underneath it sits a chocolatey depth and a smooth, almost creamy nuttiness that reminds some people of cashews. No added flavouring here, just the leaf doing its work. The liquor tends towards a bright yellow-gold, lighter than you might expect from something this flavourful.
It is bold enough to stand up to a splash of milk if that is how you take your tea, but try it black first. The rounded sweetness and gentle finish make it easy to drink on its own, and you notice more of those cocoa undertones without the dairy.
