Lemon & Ginger Tea from Porter Hill, lemon and ginger

The story

A straightforward cup with real bite

Some lemon and ginger teas are timid things, a faint suggestion of citrus, ginger you have to squint to notice. This one is not that. The ginger arrives first, warm and properly peppery, and the lemon follows with clean brightness. Marigold and safflower petals add a touch of colour to the blend without clouding the main event.

It is a simple idea done well. No hidden sweetness, no padding with apple or rosehip. Just ginger root and lemon doing exactly what you expect them to do. The cup is golden, the aroma is sharp and inviting, and the taste delivers on the promise.

Drink it first thing when you want something brisk but caffeine-free. Drink it after a big meal when you fancy something warming. Drink it mid-afternoon when coffee would keep you up. It works hot, and it is surprisingly good chilled over ice on a warm day too.

How to brew it

How to brew a proper cup

01Hot

Amount
1 tsp (about 3g)
Water
100°C, freshly boiled
Time
3 minutes

Longer steeping brings more ginger heat if you like it fierier.

02Stronger brew

Amount
1 heaped tsp
Water
100°C
Time
4–5 minutes

A bolder cup for those who want the ginger to really announce itself.

03Iced

Amount
2 tsp per 300ml
Water
100°C, then cool
Time
Brew 4 minutes, chill over ice

The citrus shines when cold. Add a slice of fresh lemon if you like.

Shop tip: Use a teapot or infuser with plenty of room. The ginger pieces need space to release their flavour fully.

Made for moments like

Cold morning, warm hands

Wrap your fingers around the mug on a grey Yorkshire morning. The ginger warmth travels right through you.

After Sunday lunch

When the roast is finished and you want something light and warming but not caffeinated. This fits the bill.

Mid-afternoon pick-me-up

That slump around three o'clock. A zingy cup wakes you up without keeping you up later.

Good questions

Things people ask us in the shop

Does Lemon & Ginger Tea contain caffeine?

No. It is naturally caffeine-free, made from ginger, lemon, marigold and safflower petals with no tea leaf. Drink it any time of day or night.

How many cups will I get from each pack?

The 50g pack makes around 16–17 cups, the 100g about 33, and the 250g roughly 83. A teaspoon weighs about 3 grams.

Can I add milk?

You can, but we would not recommend it. The citrus and ginger flavours work best on their own. A little honey is nice if you want sweetness.

Is it very spicy?

There is definite ginger warmth, but it is not overpowering. If you enjoy ginger in cooking you will find this comfortable. Steep longer for more heat.

How should I store it?

Keep it sealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and strong aromas. It will stay fresh for months stored properly.

Quite strong on the ginger - so great if you like that level of warmth or if you have a cold and want a soothing brew. A squeeze of honey helps if you are like me and prefer to tone down the ginger a little
