Caffeinated South American herbal
Yerba Maté brings grassy, earthy depth and a natural caffeine lift without reaching for the coffee jar. For mornings when you want something different that still means business.
The story
Yerba Maté comes from the leaves of Ilex paraguariensis, an evergreen shrub native to Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. It has been drunk across South America for centuries, traditionally shared from a gourd with a metal straw called a bombilla. The leaves are blanched, dried and aged before they reach your cup.
The infusion opens green and vegetal, somewhere between fresh grass and a savoury, almost brothy quality. As it cools, the flavour mellows into something woody and faintly coffee-like, with a gentle bitterness that never overwhelms. It is robust, clean and surprisingly moreish.
Because it contains caffeine, Maté slots neatly into the mid-morning gap or an early afternoon slump. It offers a different kind of lift to black tea or coffee, and the earthy flavour gives it enough weight to feel like a proper drink, not a compromise.
How to brew it
01Hot
Strain fully to avoid bitterness building.
02Cooler brew
Lower temperature softens bitterness and brings out gentle sweetness.
03Second steep
Good for a second cup; expect a lighter, mellower flavour.
Shop tip: If you find the first cup too bitter, try water around 70–80°C instead of a full boil. It softens the edge and lets the grassy sweetness come through.

Good questions
Yes. Maté naturally contains caffeine, so it will give you a lift similar to tea or coffee. The exact amount per cup depends on how much leaf you use and how long you brew it.
It is traditionally drunk without milk and the grassy, vegetal flavour works best that way. You could try a splash, but most people find it does not need it.
Using about 1.5g per cup, a 100g bag will give you roughly 65 cups, plenty for a few weeks of morning brews.
There is a gentle bitterness, but it is balanced by savoury, earthy notes. Brewing with water around 70–80°C and not over-steeping keeps it smooth.
Keep it sealed, cool and dry, away from heat, sunlight and anything with a strong smell. A cupboard away from the hob is ideal.
Green maté leaves make a bold, vegetal infusion with a gently woody finish. Yerba-Maté is a distinctive South American alternative to tea from Camellia sinensis.
It naturally contains caffeine. Choose it for its leafy depth, then compare the roasted version for a toastier cup.
