Roasted Yerba-Maté herbal tea from Porter Hill, roasted and toasty

The story

Roasted leaf, not roasted beans

Yerba maté comes from the South American holly tree, Ilex paraguariensis, and has been drunk across Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil for centuries. The roasted version takes those bold, grassy leaves and toasts them until they turn mellow and dark. The result sits somewhere between tea and coffee: full-bodied, warming, with none of the grassiness you get from green maté.

Expect flavours of toast, a hint of coffee, and a gentle creaminess that reminds some folk of Japanese hōjicha. The bitterness backs off, the smoothness comes forward, and what remains is a cup with genuine depth. It brews dark amber and fills the kitchen with that warm, roasted smell.

This one suits the mid-morning moment when you fancy something with a bit of backbone but want a change from your usual brew. The caffeine is there, so it will keep you going through whatever the afternoon throws at you.

How to brew it

How to brew roasted maté

01Hot

Amount
1 teaspoon (about 1.5g)
Water
100°C freshly boiled
Time
3 minutes

Strain well and enjoy black. A second steep works if you like a lighter cup.

02Longer steep

Amount
1 teaspoon
Water
100°C
Time
5 minutes

Draws out more roasty depth without turning bitter. Good on a cold morning.

03Iced

Amount
2 teaspoons
Water
100°C, then cool
Time
3 minutes, then chill

Brew strong, pour over ice, and let it mellow into a refreshing cold drink.

Shop tip: Use water just off the boil and avoid over-steeping on the first cup; the flavour holds well for a second infusion if you prefer it gentler.

Good questions

Things people ask us in the shop

Does roasted yerba maté contain caffeine?

Yes. Maté naturally contains caffeine, though the exact amount depends on the leaf and how you brew it. Expect a noticeable lift, roughly similar to a cup of tea or a little more.

What does roasted maté taste like compared to green maté?

Roasting takes away much of the grassy bitterness. You get a smoother, toastier cup with hints of coffee and a mellow finish instead of that sharp, vegetal edge.

Can I add milk to roasted maté?

It is generally best without, but a small splash of milk can work if you like a creamy brew. Try it black first to get a feel for the flavour.

How many cups will I get from a 100g pouch?

Using about 1.5g per cup, a 100g pouch makes roughly 65 cups. Plenty to see whether roasted maté becomes a regular in your rotation.

How should I store it?

Keep it sealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and strong smells. An airtight caddy or resealable pouch works well.

Full product details

Roasted Yerba-Maté is a rich, full-bodied and smooth brew. Flavours of coffee and toast make it deeply satisfying and quite different to conventional teas.

Prepared from the evergreen shrub, Ilex paraguariensis, Yerba Maté is the traditional drink throughout Latin America. When roasted, it’s toasty, slightly creamy - reminiscent of Japanese Hōjicha. Both green and roasted maté contain caffeine. We do not have a measured caffeine comparison for these products.

A lovely option when you want to try something a little different.
