Matcha vs Coffee: Flavour, Caffeine & Preparation

Matcha and coffee are both caffeinated drinks, but they taste, feel and prepare very differently. The best choice is the one that suits your palate and caffeine tolerance.

Flavour and method

Matcha is powdered green tea whisked into water, with savoury, vegetal and softly sweet notes. Coffee is brewed from roasted seeds and ranges from fruity to chocolatey and bitter. Matcha needs a bowl and whisk; coffee methods vary from filter to espresso.

Caffeine is not a fixed number

Serving size, product and preparation all matter. EFSA notes that caffeine sensitivity varies and that 100 mg close to bedtime can affect sleep in some adults.

What about L-theanine?

A systematic review of randomised trials found small-to-moderate differences in some attention and mood measures after theanine with caffeine, but also substantial uncertainty. The authors called for more research using actual tea drinks and tea-equivalent doses. That is not evidence that every bowl produces “calm focus” or prevents a crash.
